Sennzia’s Gingerbread soldiers are mixed, rolled out, cut into shapes, baked, decorated and finally hexed into life at Gingercroft, which also serves as their barracks. Every gingerbread soldier is decorated by hand, often by different fairies or pixies and is slightly different. Each batch of mix is intended to use the same recipe, but sometimes ingredients vary slightly from batch to batch. Finally, the hex has ingredients of its own, and variations occur at that stage as well. The process means that every soldier comes out a little bit different.
Sennzia’s gingerbread soldiers are trained and indoctrinated to be loyal to Queen Jillian, but they are also sentient beings with free will. Some individuals have chosen to leave the military and seek happiness in other ways.
Under Sennzian law, gingerbread soldiers have all legal rights of citizens and are paid for their service. That pay is usually very little, but many gingerbread men have few prospects outside of the military. Those who have left often struggle to find work, as they never received a strong enough education in the barracks to do well outside of it.
Also, many soldiers are simply grateful to have been given life. They see Queen Jillian as a mother and lifegiver, even though she isn’t the one who hexed them directly. They understand that it is her fairy magic which powers Gingercroft, and it was her choice to bring each of them to life.
Powers
Gingerbread soldiers are trained to use chocolate guns, which blast opponents with gooey, sticky chocolate that quick-dries to hold targets fast. They specialize in nonlethal combat, with a focus on the restraint and capture of enemy combatants. Sennzian law forbids the killing of any sentient creature, so while their guns may appear frightening, they are unlikely to result in serious physical damage.
The soldiers themselves are resistant to cold and heat and will actually become tougher and stronger if burned. While they do not need to eat, they can enjoy foods used in their own substance, consuming milk, eggs, flour, ginger, sugar and icing best of all. While consuming such materials will not allow them to regenerate lost limbs, it can help them recover energy expended in battle.
Gingerbread soldiers are, of course, edible. They are particularly ineffective against larger creatures like dragons. Their design and scale is intended to defend Sennzia from attack by armies of humanoid invaders.
