Ulmond is the fifth king of Yarsaria in an unbroken patriarchal line going back over fourteen hundred years. Ulmond has ruled Yarsaria for over four hundred years, and, thanks to his grandfather’s strategic marriage to an Argen princess, is now also the Argen King. He was coronated as king of the Argen line of Ulmond just under two hundred years ago. From the Argen line, he takes his first name, while he continues the renowned surname of his great-great grandfather, Naramon Ehrenfell. Naramon was the First King of Yarsaria, who signed the Ehrenfell Agreement with Queen Jillian Floquet of Sennzia, a secret covenant whose terms are shared only with Naramon’s direct descendants. His territories now include the vast underground kingdom of the Argen.
Ulmond was a fighter from his earliest days, and spent his youth as a bold adventurer, traveling The ManyRealms in search of great conquests. He was never expected to become king, as he had an older brother, Lorthvend, who was schooled from a young age to take the throne when their father passed. This gave Ulmond the freedom to study fighting styles and practice combat maneuvers with his mother, Heron, who had been a knight prior to becoming queen. Ulmond also had one younger brother, Siegur Ehrenfell, who now lives in an undisclosed realm outside of Sennzia.
Tragically, Lorthvend was assassinated by enemies of the crown. Fourteen years later, King Galdorr Ehrenfell passed away at the age of 286 and Ulmond was coronated as King of Yarsaria the following year.
After taking the throne, it was expected of Ulmond to produce an heir, so he married an elven noble from Narmeth. The von Wersia family had been promised by Galdorr that one of their daughters would marry Lorthvend. Lorthvend, however, chose to marry a princess from another realm. The von Wersias had long expected to have a queen in their family, but Ulmond then chose to wed Jooleese Nathauafa’i of Narmeth instead of honoring his father’s promise. This created tension with the von Wersias, who were overseeing construction of Ulmond’s castle.
Ulmond and Jooleese had one son together after many failed attempts. Prince Lentarion is now heir to the unified kingdom.
Fifty-two years ago, Queen Jillian of Sennzia allowed dragons to enter the realm for the first time in history, and named the legendary and terrifying Balkinitros as “Protector of the Realm,” granting him the vast lands of the Greenway. Ulmond had long sought to claim the Greenway as part of Yarsaria, but Jillian would never allow it. Ulmond opposed the dragons entry into Sennzia, and warned that war and misery would be the only result.
By his own hand, he made it so. The elves of Yarsaria, under the angry and always militant King Ulmond, invaded the Greenway. Under the dragon’s rulership, it was no longer part of the Queendom. As an independent nation, the Greenway was vulnerable to an attack which would not violate the Yarsar Pact. Ulmond thought that if he could seize the Greenway by force, killing dragons as he had done in his youth, it would finally be his.
Balkinitros and his lieutenants devastated the elven forces at the river now named “Elves’ End” and surged forward into Yarsaria, seizing Wersia, then began moving toward Yarsar. At his wife’s urging, King Ulmond offered to meet Balkinitros for peace talks. The talks went poorly, and shots were fired. The legendary dragon became angry and retaliated. In the chaos, Jooleese was killed, allegedly by the acidic breath of Balkinitros.
King Ulmond flew into a rage and called upon an ancient weapon he had long kept secret. Early in his adventuring days, Ulmond had slain a wicked warlord who was tormenting the people of the Toscharti Plains in the Realm of Woath. The warlord’s source of power was a sword so horrible that Ulmond had refused to touch it for nearly three hundred years.
With the sword finally in his hands, King Ulmond flew into a rage and nearly killed the mighty Balkinitros, who was only saved by the intervention of his dragon lieutenants. The dragons fled back to the Greenway. Yarsarian elves retook Wersia not long after, but never pushed far enough back into their old territory to reclaim the river. It remains part of the Greenway’s lands now, with many elves, particularly the Autumnals, unable to return home.
King Ulmond sought revenge for the death of his wife, and after much research learned of the existence of Balkinitros’ son. King Ulmond took his deadly sword to the realm where Balkinitros’ first-born lived, murdered the younger dragon and had its scales and wings turned into a suit of winged armor.
After returning from Annokwi, King Ulmond declared a state of martial law upon Yarsaria. He eliminated the Parliamentary system which had been observed since the Yarsar Pact and sent his son to the island city of Narmeth for safety, far from the war zones. Wersia became a military outpost outfitted with flying skytowers, and many of its original inhabitants became refugees.
It is unlikely that the war will end while Balkinitros and King Ulmond both live. Their hatred for one another is absolute.
